January 26, 2010 – All That Remains, Gemma Ray, Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs, Spinnerette, Illa J and State Radio are among the diverse mix of self-released and independent label talent named by Music Resource Group (MRG) today as Winners in The 9th annual Independent Music Awards (The IMAs), the influential awards program for independent bands and fans.

The Winners in more than 50 album, song, music video and design categories culled from thousands of submissions from around the globe, were determined by a panel of 80 influential artists and industry pros including Tom Waits, The Black Keys, Ricky Skaggs, Pete Wentz, Mark Hoppus, Aimee Mann, The Apples in Stereo, David Garrett, Suzanne Vega, Bettye LaVette, Judy Collins, Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward.

Haiti and Doctors Without Borders

Just a quick post to encourage clients, friends and associates to donate to Doctors Without Borders, the 1999 Nobel Prize Winning humanitarian organization and their mission to help Haiti. 200,000 dead and 300,000 insured - Haiti needs all the support we can give.

MSF (Medecins Sans Frontieres) the world's leading independent international medical relief organization, with 5 operational centres in Europe and 14 national sections worldwide.

In most cases, their relief programs change to rehabilitation projects that may run for several years after the most urgent needs have been met.

Haiti as we are know is in dire straits - we, the team at MUSIC2 Management, feel incredibly lucky to be living in Canada, the US and the UK.

We have donated $600 to this fantastic organization, that has been running for more than 35 years. The Canadian Government matched this and all other donations in the last month.

We urge people if you are able to do the same.

If you are a fan of electronic dance music and visited New York City during the past 10 years, no doubt you witnessed the impact Nickodemus made on the big city scene. The Brooklyn-based artist has performed alongside a decade’s worth of the scene’s finest international talent and soundtracked the summers with his massively popular Turntables On The Hudson live events. More than just 4/4 beats and a night out, Nickodemus is known for adding something a bit more musical and spiritual to the mix. There's real culture and social themes incorporated into Nickodemus' music. With the weather warming up timing could not be better for the release of Nickodemus' sophomore artist CD, the aptly titled Sun People (released June 16 on Thievery Corporation's ESL Music).

Conceptually, Sun People was built with songs made for people who love the sun, sunshine and brighter days to come. Songs were inspired by various people Nickodemus met and places he's been, along with his collective feelings of optimism. "Sun People makes the best of every situation. When that sun peaks out in the sky, it's another day to feel and do something positive" Nickodemus says.

Sun People mixes positive sonic vibes from all over the globe with collaborators hailing from destinations including Guinea, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Romania, India, Turkey, United Kingdom and New York City. Recording artists The Real Live Show guests on the uplifting Hip-Hop jam "Sun Children" while Quantic lends his unmistakable groove on the Salsa Ritmo of "La Lluvia." Not to be outdone, Brazilian songstress Liliana Araujo features on the hot samba of "Gira Do Sol" while Mandingo vocalist Ismael Kouyate lends his Afro-beat groove to "N'Dini." Nickodemus honed his skill as resident DJ for Giant Step-produced (NYC) functions from 1995 – 1999 where he provided support DJ sets for live concerts from Gil Scott Heron, Jazzmattazz, The Pharcyde, Mos Def & Kweli, KRS-One, Us 3, Thievery Corporation, Groove Collective, Pucho & the Latin Soul Brothers, Angelique Kidjo and Femi Kuti. In 1998, Nickodemus became resident DJ and producer for Turntables On The Hudson (TOTH) - one of the first late night outdoor events in NYC. The party became an adventurous, young, free-spirited community known for its eclectic musical blend of Hip-Hop, funk, house and soul played back to back with Latin, Afrobeat and Eastern European gypsy sounds. After ten years, the TOTH parties are now taking place every Friday at the Water Taxi Beach in Long Island City, Queens overlooking Manhattan and the East River.

MUSIC2 - WMC 2009

After a whirlwind week in Miami - yes it was slightly quieter but we didn't mind the general lack of spring breakers - Industry was out in full force - dance music summer camp rules!

Coral Gables lot have moved into sassy South Beach! Guess what - South Beach is loud - if you want quiet go to the glades people

Nickodemus and Mariano had one of the best sets we saw at Giantstep's Sessions at The Delano, Migs did a marathon three sets three nights in a row, Lisa Shaw did an intimate in store at Cafe Bustelo's boutique at the bottom of The Gaanesvoort as well as two other performances, blowing everyone away. Andy Caldwell rocked the Ministry Of Sound event at Aerobar as well as at Afternoon Delight at the Beach Plaza. James Curd funked us all up at the Om Records party on Saturday night alongside Chromeo, Diplo and Kruder and Dorfmeister. All in all a productive and fun time was had.

Big props to my management homies, Jared Barboza from Abbot Monroe, Neil Guzman from Republik Management, Dan Ross from X Mix and the lovely Randy Reed from Red Light Management. The Union lives!

Caroline will be down in LA from April 13th-23rd and of course soaking up music and sun at Coachella. You can reach her on US mobile # 415 374-9963.

MUSIC2 Fall Update

Back from a fantastic trip to Europe. Meetings in London and the Amsterdam Dance Event. ADE is hands down the most organised and efficient conference I have been to. A great meeting of music industry heads. If you run a label, publishing company, management company and have not been, go next year.

Thursday November 6th I am off to San Francisco and then LA on November 11th for The Hollywood Reporter/Billboard Film & TV Music Conference.

Projects wise on Salted Music we have Lisa Shaw's sophomore album "Free" that we are releasing February 2009. Miguel Migs, Dave Warrin and Tim K produced tracks on the album.

Andy Caldwell is finishing off his sophomore album and has relaunched Uno Recordings with his track featuring Gramma Funk, "Funk Nasty". The Wolfgang Gartner remix is getting hammered by djs worldwide. Pete Tong favourite "Warrior" featuring Lisa Shaw has also been re-released on Uno. It has been remixed by Tiger Stripes and is getting support from the likes of Laurent Garnier, Judge Jules and Roger Sanchez.

James Curd's project with Chris Holmes, Science and Industry is already getting a buzz from music licensing execs in London and LA. Keep your ears and eyes peeled... James and Tommie Sunshine have a project in the pipeline and Mark Share and James are working on the next Greenskeepers album. Does the man ever sleep?! He is touring Australia in support of his Limbo Sessions compilation with Electric Circus from Australia.

What Does An Artist's Manager Do?

So, what exactly does the artist manager do?

The duties of the artist manager number many. They include (but are not limited to):

Determining the artist's business status and recommending/negotiating with a business entity

Evaluating and filling the artist's personnel requirements

Bookkeeping and balancing the artist's budget

Formulating and marketing the artist's image

Mapping out a career plan for the artist; establishing career goals

Negotiating and securing a recording contract

Hiring a producer and personnel for record production and publication

Coordinating live performances and appearances

Establishing merchandising and commercial relations (possibly worldwide)

Business, however, is not the only realm of an artist's career that the artist manager involves himself in. A manager may also be involved in the creative aspects of the process: this may include:

Making suggestions for improvements in a recording

Helping with instrumentals (if the manager has experience musically)

Overseeing all creative aspects of the process

There are, however, aspects of the artist's career that a manager must not involve himself with, or does not have to involve himself with, in order to obtain the artist's fee:

Actively seeking employment for the artist. This is the booking or theatrical agent's job. The manager must locate and hire these employees.

Actively producing the artist's records. This is the job of the studio: the manager must negotiate and sign with one.

Promote or administer copies of the artist's work. This is the job of the publisher: the manager must hire this employee.
