Youth Attack Interview 2009

Youth Attack, aka Leeds based DJ/production duo Lee Dunn & Chris Petty, first came bursting onto the scene with their remix of Shadow Dancer's 'Daytime Drinking', and have since then produced a solid collection of equally loud, dancefloor destroying remixes for the likes of Foals, Late Of The Pier, The Human League, Tiga and more with their own brand of Electro, Techno and Cut-Up Disco.
Favorite night played?
It would have to be the Bad Sneakers night in Leeds we played with Surkin. Really good party atmosphere and we got... very drunk.
Kill the rhythm, what are the plans for developing the brand in the future?
Well we've just started a new night in Leeds, it all kicks off in May, and its free! We've got people like Felix Cartal, In Flagranti, Jokers of the Scene & Joe and Will Ask? playing for us. There are hopes as well of launching a digital label in the near future.
What do you have coming up in the way of remixes and possible future release?
We're just finishing off remixes for Andy Caldwell and Bass Weazel. Our remix of Heads We Dance should be seeing a release sometime soon, as well as one we did for our friends Eskimo Twins. We're in the process of getting our first release out, followed by an EP in the summer!
Are you going to dress up for your Ditch It All performance, or merely stick to playing a few exclusives?
We might pretend it's our last live performance, dress up like members of the seminal rock outfit 'Queen', as well as donning the Mic for an impromptu guest appearance from Blackout Crew.
Does an ideal night out for YA end with Porn or each other?
Both. Nothing says love like that of another gentleman.
Having previously been a band named Arcane War Machine playing grindcore and moving on to a band named Youth Attack, do you feel there is an element of your nature which glorifies and revels in violence and do see you this a psychological dysfunction?
They just both sound wicked.
Why change your musical styling's so rapidly because of two unattractive males with a penchant for dressing up like robots?
True fact -- Did you know that the members of Daft Punk are the former two lead guitarists from Megadeth?
Daft Punk just came back into our knowledge at a crucial time, when we were getting bored of the music scene we were in and wanted a change. It was also greatly aided by the lovely Erol Alkan.
Does this lead on to abnormal feelings for other sci-fi creations, Spock perhaps, or Red Dwarf's Kryton?
We are both massive geeks at heart, we just try to hide it well. I think part of that comes out in our music, just not the homosexual sci-fi feelings part.
Why has Chris dyed his hair black, is he an electro-goth?
Haven't you heard? Black is the new Black. If hair dye is good enough for Tiga, its good enough for me.
Jane Doe or Homework?
Jane Doe – Enough said.
Do you have any plans to write a record that will sync with a bizarre film, (example?)
Pink Floyd had it nailed. There's also the theory about Human After All syncing up with Electroma. I think if we were to try it, we'd sync our epic 5th Album up with Commando.
Do you like Fishsticks?
Fish Fingers? They're alright. Birdseye have just brought out those new Salmon Fish Fingers, Its dead posh. Chris loves them.
